one. I was born in the 20th century. that means almost 2000 years since Jesus' death - so there's no way of me getting confused and thinking I had anything to do with getting me 'saved'. like the bible says, 'it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that no one can boast'

2. God saved me when I was 7 or 8 years old (haven't checked the date exactly) - so there was nothing in me then that I could offer God. there's no chance He was looking towards my future, either - as an 8 year-old I didn't swear, I didn't fight, I wasn't a porn addict, I wasn't a bully... it's not like He saved me under the misconception that I'd 'be somebody'. 'God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us'

the protestant reformers said 'soli Deo gloria' - glory to God alone. I don't know much latin, but I agree

he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now...

the closing lines from the new batman film I went to see yesterday with a few friends and a couple of two-for-one vouchers...

as batman is chased off into the darkness by the cops of Gotham city, Lt. James Gordon utters the last few words of the film.

without wishing to spoil the film (especially for Gareth - happy birthday for tomorrow buddy) too much, I was left reflecting on the justice of batman, and couldn't quite bring myself to understand some of the things he did, or didn't do. I almost found myself siding with the crowds and wanting him gone - after all, he showed up the criminals in Gotham and only made things worse...

got me thinking a bit about Jesus, my hero...

Noah, flood, God judges sin etc. the story had me thinking quite a bit the other day - about how bad our sin really is before God, about how it deserves death...

then there's this bit towards the end. some translations have the word 'rainbow', but the original word (apparently) means the same for 'bow' like the weapon. so God stops his judgement, puts his arrows of lightning away and holds his bow upwards, promising to hold back his judgement.

when talking about Jesus' death, Paul says that "in his forbearance he [God] had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished". with his judgement in Genesis 8 in mind, how great is that 'forbearance'!

Jesus warns that this won't be forever;
"Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man" when he returns...

went to a big hippy convention last weekend. well, sort of... it was very good, don't get me wrong - but there were one or two things you just had to laugh about.

they had a fair trade stall selling t-shirts and jewelry etc, and when you think about it - that's the stupidest thing ever! sure it was all fair trade, but it was still shipped from miles and miles away so that someone who didn't really need it (I doubt people go to these conventions to do their shopping. that'd be an expensive shop) could buy it. why not just give the money away - reduce the clothing and jewelry you buy and reuse or recycle what you're wearing now!

I say that to me, mostly...

one thing I loved was one of the patches on this big tent thing they had... someone had drawn pac man and written "pac man [heart]s fair trade". what a message.

a story from a magazine that someone gave me...

Sleep.

Unable to sleep, the man takes a sleeping pill. Groggy in the morning, he finds he must pop a caffeine pill just to stay awake; a vitamin tab to stay healthy; and a good day herb to stay sane.

At lunch he takes a diet supplement drug. To relax in the afternoon he takes a sedative. For entertainment after hours he indulges in a sex pill.

The man takes a sleeping pill - unable to sleep.

In the morning he wakes to find a grizzly bear standing over him.

I kissed you, the bear says. I kissed you and you woke up.

Thanks. Want some breakfast? The man asks.

No, I'm not hungry. I just had a goldilocks and some porridge. Maybe later though.

Later, for lunch, the bear slashes at the man's stomach. Pills spill from his abdominal cavity. The man smiles and laughs. The bear wants to cry, but finds himself unable to cry.

The bear wakes to find it was all just a horrible dream.

The bear goes to work at the circus. People toss him hot dog butts and candyfloss sticks. They poke at him with rules and pelt him with stones.

He sues, but loses his lawsuit on account of bad lawyers he hired from a television commercial. The bear attacks the attorneys, tearing them limb from twisted limb. One of the lawyers cries out for his wife. She wakes him.

It was only a dream, his wife says.
I had the most horrible dream. I dreamt I was a lawyer, the man confesses.

The woman wakes.

I was married to a man dreaming he was a lawyer eaten by a bear. Now I can't remember whether I'm a woman dreaming of being a lawyer's wife, or a lawyer's wife dreaming that she is a woman.

today I found out that Larry Norman (an old Christian rocker) died on the 24th february - last month. I'm sad, because he was an incredible lyricist and I really enjoy listening to his music. I'm also sad because I know that the end of his life was quite a struggle physically, he was very ill.

but I also rejoice for him. the writer of the book of hebrews in the bible writes

"Christ... has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him."

Larry Norman died knowing this, that death was not the end of it all for him - that one day Jesus will return, the dead will be raised to life and judged. and for Larry (it sounds like I know him - doesn't it!), that means being judged not according to the life he lived (sinful, like mine and yours), but according to Jesus' sinless life...

but maybe more of that tomorrow.

this is quality... free peer-to-peer music downloading that's legal and the artists have got on board to receive commission. it works because they use drm to track what's being listened downloaded/listened to so they can work out how much to pay out - and their income is from companies keen to do advertising on such a brilliant product. I think sin is a bit like how I'm eating chocolate at the moment... everywhere I look at the moment, the temptation to eat chocolate is there... today in pool I lost our doubles game after a spectacular shot by accidentally potting the black. I proceeded to get 7-balled in my singles match (trousers were dropped, 2 laps were completed) and then accidentally shouted 'tourrettes' when their captain was taking a shot against our captain in the deciding match. we won though, thanks to me.
